Caribbean Yard Campus is an educational enterprise that is designed to network traditional knowledge systems in the Caribbean.
The CYC offers its first Conversational T&T Sign Language Course: See Me Speak as part of its Dry Season 2019 Programme. The sign language course is a ‘hands-on’ learning experience full with information about local Deaf language and culture. This course is perfect for educators, brand ambassadors, medical professionals, media presenters. Classes are Wednesdays 10 am -12 noon and Saturdays 1-3pm.
Another first is Panchayat, a 12 week course for aspiring business co-operative developers and community organizers. The course is conducted in conjunction with the Ministry of Labour and Small Enterprise Development, Co-operative Development Division. A course developed to facilitate the improvement of community based groups and co-operatives through best practices in Caribbean traditional community systems. Sessions are on Tuesdays 5-7pm and Saturdays 2-5pm at the Lloyd Best Institute, Tunapuna.
Join Nou Ka Palé Patwa and communicate with the Caribbean kwéyòl speaking community. This course promises lots of exciting games, stories and learning opportunities in patois speaking communities of Paramin, Blanchiseusse and Talparo. Class dates are: Wednesdays 5-7pm and Saturdays 9am-12pm.
Planting People will teach gardening techniques and some simple projects to make your backyard and small farms more productive and profitable. Activities will include how to set up an integrated farm, ecological crop management, craft use of plants, and establishing community skills banks and business approaches to empower and better organize self-help groups. Classes are located in Caura Valley, Saturdays 8 am – 12 noon.
Learn the science behind the bush tea your granny made. Sweet Broom and Bitter Bush: the Science of Traditional Medicine will help its learners discern the wisdom in their grandparents’ folk practices and encourage a natural, holistic approach to health and healing supported by scientific research. Classes take place on Thursdays 5-7pm and Saturdays 8-11am.
Caribbean Yard Campus welcomes community- based organizations to register for special prices. All courses are open to the public, and there are no pre-requisites except for your curiosity and desire to learn more about some of our locally used Caribbean languages and traditional practices. Teaching starts from the 8th of April 2019.
