Earth to Sky: Building Mas from the Ground Up

Caribbean Yard Campus launches the next cycle of its NTATT-certified Mas Design Certificate Programme

Mas is more than costume — it’s movement, story, and skill. This March, Caribbean Yard Campus (CYC) invites makers, artists, and dreamers to step into the world of ‘Earth To Sky’: Mas Design, Construction and Performance, a year-long certificate course in Construction and Performance.

This NTATT-certified programme prepares participants for the Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) in Masquerade Design and Production, Level 2 — the recognised standard for Skilled Workers in the art and industry of mas. Students gain the creative, technical, and cultural foundation to design, build, and perform Carnival costumes from concept to completion.

Learning by Doing

At CYC, learning happens through making. The Earth To Sky course is delivered as a practical, hands-on experience, where participants build real skills through guided creation. Classes are held in person every Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Studio 66, #66 Sixth Street, Barataria.

Workshops are immersive and collaborative, encouraging participants to continue projects beyond class times and to work closely with peers. Students will also be placed in real-world situations where they can apply their knowledge and skills — reflecting the Campus’s belief in collaborative rather than competitive learning.

Course Highlights

Participants will explore the full spectrum of mas creation, including:

  • Foundational Studies in design, Caribbean masquerade traditions, performance, and health and safety.
  • Technical Workshops in fabric work, wire sculpting, papier mâché, recycled materials, and structural design.
  • Business Tools for the Carnival Industry, including budgeting, contracts, marketing, and networking.

There are no prerequisites or prior learning requirements, and all materials and tools are supplied.
