In many ways the presence of the First Peoples of the region is indelibly stamped on the landscape and culture of the Caribbean. Yet this presence often remains invisible. This course introduces participants to the cultures of the Warau, Lokono, Garifuna and Kalipuna peoples of the region. Emphasis is placed on understanding the worldview, languages and customs of these cultures, as well as their value to the challenges of the contemporary world.
The course is facilitated by native speakers in Guyana and Belize with the coordination of our partners the Guyanese Languages Unit, University of Guyana and the Arima First Peoples’ Community in Trinidad.
Classes are on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. between September 25 and December 14, 2024.
